9/26/22

Worship this Sunday.
Reading through the lens of gratitude and grace, our story is Abram and Sarai’s call, Genesis 12:1-9.

Elders’ minutes are attached.
The congregational conversation for Thursday (the 22) will include three parts:
1) Review of proposed guidelines for recording these conversations:  a) to be used only for congregational participants; b) will be available for one month; c) participants may choose to not have their sharing recorded.2) Proposal to pay Credence to help on relationship building the remainder of 2022 prior to entering a stage of envisioning our future with the transitional pastor’s help in 2023. This will require yet-to-be-determined giving above the church budget.3) Hear from Keith, Mary, and Wendell about the gathering at Cyneatha’s house. Share our responses to the question she is asking Mennonite Churches. Questions

  1. What or how does the congregation feel about speaking and giving collectively?
  2. How does Tolson connect with the church’s current mission?
  3. Considering the history of Elkhart and Goshen, how can Mennonites show reconciliation and speak to the entire community?
  4. Is the congregation ready to financially give?
  5. What other ways does your congregation hope to support the work of Tolson?
  6. What more information would be helpful for the congregation to have?

Elders’ Meeting Minutes Fellowship of Hope September 13, 2022
Present: Suella Lehman Gerber, Mary Schertz, David Janzen Absent: Wendell Wiebe-Powell

  1. Suella reminded us the Bible has many journey stories from Sarah and Abraham forward. Jesus
left his home to enter his ministry, and as His followers we leave the familiar and face the
unknown, often difficult new surroundings. God promises to journey with us and wrap us with
grace as we take the opportunity to grow even if our destination is unclear.
  2. Credence Advisor status: Suella reported her conversation with Marg Van Herk-Paradis that she
is open to doing facilitated conversation with FoH folks to help restore relationships. She will
offer coaching in advance of the conversations. Marg believes FoH will not be successful in
achieving reconciliation without outside help. Working on the longer-term visioning of the
church requires attention first to interpersonal relationships. We strongly recommend this
happen during the rest of calendar year 2022.
  3. Transitional Pastor: While we do not yet know who will fill this role, he/she will be given the
entire Credence report and consult with Marg upon starting pastoral duties. IN-MI Conference
Pastor Sharon Witmer Yoder will see the Credence recommendations as she seeks the best
person to serve in the transitional role. Note: if anyone at FoH has concerns about this sharing,
please let one of the elders know. Suella will inform Congregation Coach Lois Kauffman of our
    plan.
  4. Congregational Conversation on September 21:
  • Review of proposed guidelines for recording these conversations:  a) to be used only for
congregational participants; b) will be available for one month; c) participants may choose to
    not have their sharing recorded.
  • Proposal to pay Credence to help on relationship building the remainder of 2022 prior to
entering a stage of envisioning our future with the transitional pastor’s help in 2023.  This will
require yet-to-be-determined giving above the church budget.
  • Share thoughts about Cyneatha Millsap’s request to be involved in how the remodeled Tolson
    Center should be used.
